About Us

Who we are, where we come from, and where we're headed as a church family

Who we are

Life is hard and we are not meant to journey it alone. CHT (Cariboo Hill Temple) is a community of faith that strives to love, serve and accept everyone who enters our doors. We desire to engage everyone in meaningful relationship with each other and God through the practical, life changing teaching of Scripture. We want everyone to experience the love of God through a relationship with Jesus Christ. And we believe that this relationship transforms us from the inside out into the family that God intends us to be. In a lonely and difficult world, we find connection, acceptance, love and grace. No matter who you are, or where you have journeyed we believe that "You Belong Here"

Where we come from

We are a church that belongs to The Salvation Army. That's right we are connected to those thrift stores, food banks, shelters and emergency Service trucks that you see all over the place. When the Salvation Army started in 1865 the leaders believed that the best way to invite people into a relationship with God was to show them an authentic God who met their very practical needs, where they were at. They called it the "Soup, Soap and Salvation" method. That meant feeding, sheltering, clothing, getting them jobs, detox, rehab, and Christian counseling while teaching them about a loving God, all accepting God. For over a hundred and fifty years we have done that without discrimination, or expectations that people will join our churches.

One of our earliest slogans was "Heart to God and Hand to Man". This means that we are naturally calibrated to care for, and accept people from all kinds of different walks of life. The Salvation Army and it's church is active in over a 130 countries.

CHT has been at our Burnaby location for over 35 years, but our congregation has a hundred year history in the Lower Mainland. We are a

multigenerational church that uses a 20+ piece brass band, a choir, and small worship team. We sing songs that are hundreds of years old from church hymnals,

songs written by Salvation Army members and modern songs you would find in most other churches in the Lower Mainland.

Where we're headed

We want to continue to be a Christian Community in Burnaby that cares for the people around us. We want to embrace the differences that people from different backgrounds, cultures and age groups bring to a vibrant church. We want to practically care for our community and support those in need. We want to engage different age groups in a loving and caring community that is so close we actually see ourselves as family.

What this means for you

What does this mean for you? Essentially you belong here. We want to get to know you and your family. We want to support you in your faith journey and pray that you encounter the authentic Jesus and his love for you. We have groups where you can come and belong and places where you can serve and support others.
